The atelier believes

Nature never draws a plant twice, and neither do we. A grammar is a genome; a seed number is a birthday. The rest is patience, rendered at sixty frames a second.

Verdant is a studio devoted to a narrow, stubborn idea: that the oldest notation in biology and the newest notation in computing are the same notation. In 1968, the botanist Aristid Lindenmayer wrote down a handful of rewriting rules to describe how algae branch. Those rules, called L-systems, turn out to describe ferns, willows, umbels, and meadow grass with unreasonable grace.

We cultivate them the way a Victorian herbarium cultivated pressed flowers: patiently, one plate at a time, each specimen numbered, named in bad Latin, and mounted behind ruled paper. Except our flowers are not dead. Reload the page and they germinate again, cell by cell, identical to the segment, because their whole life is folded into a single integer.

Nothing here is a photograph, an illustration, or an AI-generated image. Every stem is a line the browser drew while you watched. If that isn't gardening, it's close enough for us.

How a plant happens

Step · I

Axiom

Every specimen begins as a single symbol, X, the botanical equivalent of a seed coat. It contains nothing and implies everything.

Step · II

Rewriting

A rule like X → F−[[X]+X]+F[+FX]−X is applied to every symbol, five or six generations deep. Two characters become twenty thousand.

Step · III

The turtle walks

A turtle reads the string: F grows a segment, +/− turns by the species angle, [ ] remembers and returns. Seeded jitter keeps it honest.

Growth is time

Each segment knows its distance from the root. Your scroll position sets the sap line: everything below it is alive, everything above it is still to come.
